One of the main goals of the FCH2Rail project is to develop a fuel cell hybrid propulsion system. Therefore, it is important to gain a comprehensive understanding of its operational behaviour and to optimise the controls of the system. In WP4, one of two power packs was installed on a test bench in the CNH2 test facilities in Puertollano and extensively tested in the course of the work package. This activity covers the installation, operation and operational evaluation of the system.
The D4.2 – FC Hybrid PowerPack commissioning deals with the integration of the battery pack, the DC/DC converter, the dissipative electronic load as well as the energy management system which controls the test bench. The onboard energy storage system (OESS), its cooling system and its own DC/DC converter were mechanically, hydraulically and electrically installed and the high voltage DC/DC converter was then added to the system. Additionaly, a 650 kWe electronic load was installed to emulate the the power demand of the train for the FCHPP system. The installation was completed by the installation of an electronic energy management and control system to implement the system’s operating strategy. With these installations the FCHPP functionality was tested extensively to ensure that is fully functional for the installation in the demonstrator train.
