In June 2025, the FCH2RAIL project was successfully completed after 54 months. Within the FCH2RAIL project the first hydrogen train in the Spanish and Portuguese railway networks has successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of a hydrogen-powered bi-mode train at TRL7.
During the project, the three-car CIVIA electric multiple unit train with the number 463.199 provided by Renfe for the project in September 2021 was converted into a bi-mode H2 demonstrator train by CAF and extensively tested and demonstrated on the Spanish and Portuguese railway networks. In 2025, CAF restored the vehicle to its original condition as it was before delivery in 2021. In addition to the technical work, this also included reactivating the authorisation for use in passenger transport. The train was handed back to Renfe in June 2025.
