DLR Researcher Steffen Wieser presented the paper Limitations in the Hydrogen Refueling Process of Railway Vehicles on the Sixth International Conference on Railway Technology: Research, Development and Maintenance (RAILWAYS 2024).

The paper authored by S. Wieser, L. Brünner, M. Böhm, F. Heckert from DLR, S. Rubio from CNH2 and M. Soto from CAF outlines the process of refueling rail vehicles with hydrogen and explores the associated limitations affecting refueling time. As part of the research simulation models of the refueling process in Dymola have been set up including the dispenser of the refueling station, the flow resistances and the heat transfer of the tanks. The simulated results are validated with measurement data from the refueling process of the demonstrator train from the FCH2Rail-project.

Overall, it is shown that a refueling time of 15 minutes for rail vehicles with hydrogen is only possible with considerable process effort, such as pre-cooling.
